Species Information

Summary:
Subgenus Dermocybe. Features include 1) conic to umbonate cap that is reddish to rusty brown with an olive tone, 2) ocher flesh, 3) moderately spaced gills with a radish odor, 4) cylindric stem with rusty fibrils on a yellowish background and a yellow base, at least when young, 5) growth under conifers in fall, and 6) spores (6.5)7-8(9) x 4-5 microns. The description is derived from Niskanen(5).
Cap:
2.0-3.0cm, at first conic, later almost flat, often with an acute umbo; "reddish to rusty brown with an olive tone"
Flesh:
ocher
Gills:
moderately spaced; no notes on young gills, cinnamon brown when old
Stem:
3.0-5.0cm x 0.4-0.5cm at apex, cylindric, "fibrillose-rusty fibrils over yellowish background, base of the stipe yellow, at least when young"
Odor:
in gills radish-like
Microscopic spores:
spores (6.5)7-8(9) x 4-5 microns
Spore deposit:
[presumably close to cinnamon brown]

The type is from Victoria, BC.

SIMILAR SPECIES
The type was originally identified as Cortinarius idahoensis but the cap of the latter was originally described as "dark brown (a dark Bister) to dark cinnamon (Warm Sepia) moist, fading to olive-brown (Tawny-Olive)", (Ammirati(3)).
